En 2002, le gouvernement du Québec a fusionné de force en une seule municipalité toutes les villes de l'île de Montréal - une décision partiellement renversée en 2006. Première longue réflexion sur le sujet, La Folie des grandeurs est une critique acerbe et perspicace par un acteur clé de la lutte contre les fusions, Peter Trent.
Le maire de Westmount retrace les racines de ce délire et présente un bilan de ses conséquences. Plusieurs politiciens font partie de la distribution: Claude Ryan, Louise Harel, Lucien Bouchard, Bernard Landry, Jean Charest, Pierre Bourque et Gérald Tremblay. En toile de fond, deux langues, deux cultures et, en guise de décor, le référendum sur la souveraineté, le mouvement partitionniste, le délestage fiscal et la corruption municipale.
Patiemment et méticuleusement, Peter Trent livre avec un humour teinté d'impatience et parfois d'exaspération un récit où s'entrecroisent l'exercice autoritaire du pouvoir et une déformation alarmante des faits.
J'ai adoré ce livre. M. Trent explique d'une façon documentée, chaque page présente au minimum deux références. M. Trent a tout archivés pendant sa carrière et c'est ainsi qu'il a écrit son livre. Son livre est vraiment passionnant et contient des informations très intéressantes et des anecdotes passionnantes.
J'ai eu la chance de parler à quelques reprises avec M. Trent, c'est un homme très intelligent, généreux avec un fin sens de l'humour. Il a réalisé de grandes choses pour la ville de Westmount. Il a réussi à ramener la dette de Westmount à $0 par diverses initiatives telles que le PAYGO pour les infrastructures, le tarification à l'usage pour certains services, une discipline financière, etc
M. Trent m'a laissé une très belle impression. Je retiens particulièrement deux conseils qu'il m'a donné:

''M.Villeneuve, vous devez faire sortir le caractère caché de Saint-Lambert''
Cette phrase m'a marqué et j'y réfléchi sans cesse depuis. Notre caractère caché...
Notre village, notre patrimoine architectural, notre foresterie, notre proximité de Montréal....tout cela fait partie de notre caractère et nous devons protéger et renforcer ces points.

I loved this book. Mr. Trent explains in a documented manner, each page has at least two references. Mr. Trent archived everything during his career and that's how he wrote his book. His book is really fascinating and contains very interesting information and fascinating anecdotes.
I have had the good fortune to speak with Mr. Trent a few times, he is a very intelligent, generous man with a keen sense of humor. He has achieved great things for the city of Westmount. Our village, our architectural heritage, our forestry, our proximity to Montreal ... all this is part of our character and we must protect and strengthen these points.
